How do buyers find us now that they ask AI first?
AI Search & GEO
How AI search changed B2B discovery, and what it takes to be the source an answer gets built from.
What is GEO, or generative engine optimization?
GEO is the practice of structuring content so AI systems retrieve and cite it when answering a question. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI overviews all build answers from sources rather than returning a list of links. Where SEO competes for a ranked position on a results page, GEO competes to be the source the answer is assembled from. The mechanics are related but they are not the same discipline.
Why it matters
The most consequential difference is timing. Search rewards authority accumulated over months. AI retrieval happens at query time against whatever is indexed right now.
That single fact breaks the content calendar as a strategy. A question you have not answered yet is a citation you simply do not get, regardless of where it sits on your roadmap.
What to look at
- Whether the answer exists at all, today
- Whether it is structured to be lifted cleanly
- Whether anything more specific exists elsewhere
The VGL perspective
We publish our answer library complete rather than drip-feeding it, for exactly this reason. Half a hub answers half the questions, and the other half goes to whoever did write them.
How is GEO different from SEO?
SEO optimises for ranking through keywords, links and authority built over time. GEO optimises for retrieval and citation through direct answers, clean heading structure, schema markup and question-shaped content an engine can lift without rewriting. They overlap, because both reward genuinely useful writing. But the format that wins a cited answer is not the format that wins a top-ten position, and treating them as one job produces content that does neither well.
Why it matters
Practically, GEO favours a direct answer of roughly 60 to 100 words placed immediately under the question, with depth below it. SEO tolerates a long preamble. Retrieval does not.
The other difference is competition. Ten positions exist on a results page. An AI answer typically cites three or four sources, so the practical field is narrower and specificity matters more.
What to look at
- Answer first, context second
- Real heading structure with addressable anchors
- Schema that matches what is on the page
The VGL perspective
The pages we build put the direct answer outside the accordion for this reason. A hidden answer cannot be extracted, and a great answer nobody can lift is a wasted one.
How do you get cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?
Answer specific questions directly, in your own words, with the answer first rather than after the context. Use real heading structure so each question is individually addressable. Add FAQPage and Article schema that matches the page exactly. Publish the full set rather than releasing it over a calendar, because engines retrieve from what exists now. Then be the most specific available source, since generic answers lose to whoever included a number or a named trade-off.
Why it matters
Specificity is the part most companies skip. An answer that says outbound costs vary loses to one that says $6,000 to $10,000 for appointment setting and roughly $12,000 to build in-house.
Attribution matters too. A figure sourced to your own analysis cannot be copied by a competitor, which makes it the most durable asset on the page.
What to look at
- Answer-first structure with real headings
- Schema count matching page count exactly
- At least one specific figure per page
The VGL perspective
Every number on this site traces to something we can show. That is partly discipline and partly strategy, because unattributed claims are what AI systems increasingly discount.
Does AI search reduce website traffic?
For informational queries, yes. An AI answer frequently satisfies the question without a click, and sites that ranked for definitional searches have seen those sessions decline. What changes is which traffic matters. Visits arriving after an AI answer named you tend to be further along and better qualified, because the engine has already done the shortlisting that a results page used to leave to the reader.
Why it matters
The strategic response is to stop measuring sessions alone and start measuring whether you appear in the answers at all. A citation that drives no click still shapes the shortlist.
This also changes what a content page is for. Its job is increasingly to be quoted accurately rather than to be visited.
What to look at
- Citation share, not just session count
- Whether arriving visitors convert at a higher rate
- Which questions you are absent from
The VGL perspective
Fewer, better visitors is a good trade for most B2B companies. Losing the definitional traffic you were never going to convert is not the loss it appears to be in analytics.
What is an answer hub and why build one?
An answer hub is a structured library of direct answers to the questions buyers actually ask, grouped by topic, each with its own heading, anchor and schema markup. It differs from a blog in purpose rather than format. A blog publishes ideas in sequence and is read chronologically. A hub exists to be retrieved from, by people, search engines and AI systems, and it gets more valuable as it grows rather than scrolling out of view.
Why it matters
The practical consequence is that a hub should launch complete. Publishing it gradually means most questions go unanswered during the period when you most need to be findable.
It also compounds differently. A blog post peaks in its first week. A hub entry answering a question people keep asking gets retrieved indefinitely.
What to look at
- Complete at launch, not accumulated
- Grouped by topic, each topic its own URL
- Cross-linked to long-form content, not merged with it
The VGL perspective
We build these for clients and we build them for ourselves. This page is the same architecture we would sell you, which seemed like the only defensible way to make the argument.
